Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI)

The Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI) is a versatile, norm-referenced achievement test used to measure math, reading, spelling, and language skills. It was normed during the 2002-2003 school year and serves as a current, valid, and reliable assessment tool. The test was standardized on a sample of more than 4,000 students in grades 3-12 and college matched to the 2000 U.S. Census demographic information.

The BASI consists of 6 timed subtests:

Vocabulary (10 minutes)
Spelling (10 minutes)
Language Mechanics (10 minutes)
Reading Comprehension (30 minutes)
Math Computation (20 minutes)
Math Application (35 minutes)

Each subtest can be administered independently or in any combination. The BASI is organized into 4 grade-specific levels:

Level 1 for grades 3-4
Level 2 for grades 5-6
Level 3 for grades 7-8
Level 4 for grades 9-12

Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI) — $37 Each FLO's testing and assessment services are available only to homeschooling parents. Furthermore, all tests and testing materials remain the property of Family Learning Organization and must be returned to FLO for processing within 2 weeks of receipt. By ordering tests or assessments from FLO you certify that you are a homeschooling parent and that you agree to return all testing materials to FLO within two weeks of receipt. You also understand that failure to return materials will result in a fee of $50 per book which will be charged to the credit card given. Arrangements for an extension may be made by phoning FLO’s office.

Practice Tests — FLO offers practice tests for grades 1, 2, and 3. These practice tests are only of value for children who have never taken standardized tests. They contain a few questions in 3 subject areas and are intended to familiarize the child with the testing process rather than with the material being covered.

Spectrum Test Prep — Produced by McGraw-Hill, the premier educational publisher, these 160-page workbooks offer actual test questions in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies, and include complete answer keys. They also include tips and strategies to help students prepare for taking standardized tests. Available for grades 1 through 8. Grades 1 and 2 are covered in one workbook.
